Ebola information for Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital patients

31 October 2014

Ebola is a form of viral haemorrhagic fever (VHF). VHFs are severe and life-threatening viral diseases that have been reported in parts of Africa, South America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. VHFs are of particular public health importance because they can spread easily within a hospital setting.

This information aims to eliminate or minimise the risk of transmission to patients, visitors and health care workers coming into contact with a possibly infected patient

Please do not attend any appointments at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital if any of the following apply to you:

  • You visited Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone and returned to the UK in the last 42 days. (it is unlikely but not impossible that travellers from these countries could arrive in the UK while incubating the disease and then develop symptoms). The incubation period of Ebola virus disease is two to 42 days.
  • If you have answered 'yes' to the above please contact the hospital on 01223 266 900 and ask to speak to the nurse in charge.
  • If you have developed a fever within 42 days of returning to the UK it is imperative that you contact your GP.
