- After treatment for bladder and prostate cancer, patient credits Spire Parkway Hospital for outstanding care and support
53-year-old David Pugh first became concerned with his health when he noticed blood in his urine. Following tests, he was diagnosed with bladder cancer, and later with prostate cancer.
David was first diagnosed and treated at another hospital but was later referred to Spire to explore options for further radical surgery. Wanting timely, specialist care, he chose to continue his treatment privately at Spire Parkway Hospital in Solihull, under Consultant Urologist Mr B. Dev Sarmah, who had been personally recommended to him.
David explained: “I use private healthcare for timeliness. I was recommended a surgeon at Spire, and the treatment has been excellent. I am seen at times convenient to me, and the postoperative monitoring and care has been great for my peace of mind.”
David was supported by Mr Sarmah and the multidisciplinary team (MDT). The team recommended radical surgery, including removal of the bladder, prostate and urethra, together with an extended pelvic lymphadenectomy, which would result in an ileal conduit urinary diversion.
David underwent a Cysto-prostate-urethrectomy and described his hospital experience positively.
“The surgery was long, and when I came around, I was in quite a lot of pain. The staff were reassuring and helpful. I stayed in a very comfortable private room with a TV. The food was nice, but I was on light meals until my surgery healed.”
Following treatment, David made a strong recovery and returned to an active lifestyle.
David said: “I’ve continued my walking using ostomy support pants and a support belt to protect my stoma. This has allowed me to keep up my trips in the Lake District and Wales.”
Earlier this year, David completed a six-month sabbatical during which he visited Peru, including a trek through the Amazon Jungle and the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. He described it as a “fantastic trip - a trip of a lifetime.”
