Mr B Dev Sarmah
MBBS, FRCS (Ed)
I specialise in urology with specialist areas of interest in uro-oncology (including prostate and bladder cancers), bladder outflow obstruction (including benign prostate disease) and complex urological stone disease.
For bladder cancers I offer a full range of treatments, ranging from transuretheral resection of bladder tumours (TURBT), to intravesical chemotherapy, and bladder resection (with neo-bladder reconstruction where indicated). The same is true for my treatment of prostate cancers, for which I provide a full service, from diagnosis and cancer staging to open radical prostatectomy.
I offer patients with bladder outflow obstruction a range of treatments as appropriate, including transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), KTP laser prostatectomy and bladder neck incision.
I provide a full service for the management of urinary tract stones, including cystoscopy and ureteroscopy (+/- using laser), flexible ureteroscopy and percutaneous removal of kidney stones (PCNL). I also provide a vasectomy and vasectomy reversal service.
I was the lead in setting up the use of KTP laser prostatectomy (green light laser) within the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, and have introduced neo-bladder reconstruction at the Trust. I have adapted my radical prostatectomy anastomotic technique, leading to improved continence and overall outcomes for my patients. I also use intra-operative local anaesthetic blocks, which have significantly reduced post-operative pain, resulting in over 90% of these patients being discharged home within two days post-operatively.
I undertook the majority of my surgical training within the West Midlands, mainly in Coventry and Birmingham, and continued this at the Institute of Urology in London before moving to the UAE, where I subsequently worked as a Consultant Urological Surgeon in Abu Dhabi. I returned to the UK in 1991 and started to work as a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham, in 1993. I have now been in post for 22 years.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr B Dev Sarmah at Spire include:

If time permits, I like to cook Indian food, and in the summertime enjoy dusting down the barbeque! I have been a member of my local Rotary Club since 2001, was Club President twice, and continue to enjoy the fellowship and friendship immensely. I support Aston Villa Football Club, and am a season ticket holder with my son, although it can be stressful at times given their performances.
