Mr Atul Bansal
MBBS, MD, FRCSEd (Ophth)
I am a consultant ophthalmic surgeon based at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire. I have a special interest in modern glaucoma and cataract surgery and also deal with a full range of general ophthalmology conditions. After graduation from medical school with a first prize, I have been in the field of ophthalmology for more than 20 years. I have trained extensively including basic specialist training from the Oxford region and higher specialist training from Birmingham. I further obtained advanced training in glaucoma from the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) and a clinical fellowship with extensive experience in modern surgical and laser techniques from Manchester Eye Hospital. I received a distinction in the International council of Ophthalmology assessment and was awarded Birmingham Eye Foundation Roper-Hall Prize Medal in 2004.
I have an expertise in cataract surgery both for routine and complex cataracts and provide a specialised service with micro-incision, no sutures and an option of no-injection anaesthesia. I specialise in diagnosis and management of glaucoma and offer advanced laser and surgical techniques for glaucoma including modern trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage implant (tube surgery) and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (iStent). I am available for consultation for a full range of general ophthalmic conditions.
I am a recognised provider for most of the UK insurance providers including BUPA, Simply Health and AXA and Pruhealth and Aviva.
I am an author of 15 indexed peer reviewed publications, an MD thesis and chapters in a book on cataract surgery in difficult situations. I have regularly presented at international and national meetings. I have chaired instruction courses on glaucoma management and have been an invited speaker and faculty. I regularly provide teaching and surgical training for the registrars. I am the lead for cataract services in my department. I am the departmental lead for risk management, QIPP (quality, innovation, productivity and prevention) and clinical audit.
I am driven by delivering a patient centred service in a caring way and always aim to provide the best management with high standards of safety.
