I’m a senior consultant ophthalmic surgeon with special expertise in modern cataract and glaucoma surgery and provide consultation for general ophthalmology conditions.
I have a special clinical interests in modern cataract and glaucoma surgery, cataract surgery with lens implantation, micro-incision and small incision surgery, multifocal intraocular lens, surgery without anaesthetic injection (topical anaesthesia), sutureless cataract surgery. I also carry out glaucoma assessment and management, modern surgical techniques for glaucoma, trabeculectomy with Mitomycin C (modern glaucoma surgery with releasable sutures) and glaucoma drainage device implantation (tube surgery).
I provide a high-specification cataract surgery with micro-incision, no sutures, and an option of no-injection anaesthesia. To facilitate a reduction in patients’ dependence on glasses after cataract surgery, I offer the option of premium lenses - Multifocal lenses, Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lenses and Toric lenses.
I specialise in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma and offer advanced laser and surgical techniques for glaucoma including Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery- MIGS (iStent®), Preserflo glaucoma implant, and SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty). I am also available for consultation for general ophthalmic conditions.
After graduating from medical school with a first prize, I have been in the field of ophthalmology for more than 30 years. I have received the highest quality training at premier institutes, including Oxford Eye Hospital and Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre. During an advanced fellowship at the Manchester Eye Hospital, I gained extensive experience in modern surgical and laser techniques for cataracts and glaucoma.
I was awarded the coveted Birmingham Eye Foundation Roper-Hall Prize Medal in 2004, received multiple Clinical Excellence awards and nomination for Outstanding Service and Care (OSCA) award. I have an active interest in training registrars and have received 3 nominations for the Best Regional Trainer award.
As the clinical lead for the cataract surgery pathway at the university hospital, I have introduced numerous governance improvements and innovations to significantly enhance the standard of care for cataract patients. I have been the regional Quality Lead for the School of Ophthalmology, Health Education West Midlands, the departmental lead for postgraduate ophthalmology education and QIPS (quality, innovation, productivity and safety).
I have an active interest in and significant contributions to research, and have been a principal investigator for the international/multicentre randomized trials-EAGLE and TAGS. I have numerous peer-reviewed publications, an MD thesis and chapters in a book on cataract surgery in difficult situations. I regularly present at international and national meetings as an invited faculty.
I am driven by delivering patient-centred service, in a caring way, and always aim for the best management with high standards of safety.
Outside work, I am a passionate photographer and have a very active interest in music and love spending time with my wife and two children.
