Professional profile

I have worked as a consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon since 2007. Within the NHS, I work at the Nottingham Breast Institute, but in addition to this, I regularly provide a specialist breast surgical service to the people of Iceland and the Faroe Islands.

My main area of expertise is to offer oncoplastic breast surgery to my breast cancer patients. This type of surgery entails removing cancer from the breast, but at the same time optimising the cosmetic outcome, whether that entails partial breast reconstruction in conjunction with a lumpectomy or immediate breast reconstruction for women needing a mastectomy.

I have a particular interest in counselling and offering risk reducing surgery to women that have a genetic predisposition to getting breast cancer, ie those with BRCA gene mutations. I have organized international meetings, specifically focusing on risk reducing strategies for these high risk women.

In recent years, I have worked actively towards promoting oncoplastic breast surgery in the Nordic countries. To that end, I am one of the founding members of the NORBS (Nordic group of oncoplastic breast and reconstructive surgeons) and have organized a number of meetings and teach regularly in this specialty in the Nordic countries. Furthermore, I have a dedicated interest in cosmetic breast surgery, ie breast augmentations and breast reductions.

Research interests: BRCA gene mutation carriers, Acellular dermal matrices in breast reconstruction.

Personal Profile

Apart from working and travelling in relation to my work, I am a keen runner.  I used to compete regularly in running when I was younger, but now I run for all of the other important reasons.
