Professional profile

I am a specialist in the treatment of orthopaedic sports trauma injuries. This includes the keyhole surgical treatment of injuries to the knee, such as ligament and cartilage injury, and shoulder, such as dislocation and rotator cuff tear. In addition I can, where appropriate, administer non-operative treatments such as injections of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). I am actively involved in teaching having lectured to the University of Manchester, University of Liverpool and University of Lancaster about Orthopaedic and Sports Injuries. I am currently an Honorary Senior Lecturer at The University of Salford and I am the module Lead for The Applied Orthopaedic Radiology module.

Having gained my medical degree from the University of Southampton I carried out my Basic Surgical Training in Plymouth before then completing my higher Orthopaedic surgical training on the North West Orthopaedic rotation. I then graduated from a Sports Injuries and Reconstructive Arthroscopy Fellowship at the world-renowned University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. I remain actively involved in teaching, supervising Registrar Training surgically along with being the Lead Clinician for the FRCS Revision Group Teaching in the North West Deanery.

I am well regarded regionally for a strong research background having been published in many peer reviewed journals and medical textbooks. I have in excess of 100 presentations at National and International meetings, including the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, the World Sports Trauma Congress and the FIFA Football Medical Conference.

I have won prizes in recognition of my work. I can demonstrate my passion for the treatment of all sports injuries as my main research interests are within sport, especially injury prevention strategies, discovering the mechanism of injuries and shortening return to play times. I am an active member of the European Society of Sports Traumatology Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) and is a participant of their Education Committee. I am a member of The International Committee of The Arthroscopic Association of North America (AANA) and the incumbent Honorary Treasurer for the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma & Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA).

With a keen interest in sport I have worked with a number of sports clubs and associations both amateur and professional including Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, Barrow Raiders RLFC, Bury FC, University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, Vancouver Canadians (Baseball), Winnipeg Blue Bombers (American Football) and Vancouver Canucks (Ice Hockey). I have also collaborated with the Football Association (The FA) with recent projects to help decrease the injury rates in the England National Football team. I have recently completed the FIFA Football Medicine Diploma and I am currently sitting the International Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Diploma.

Personal Profile

Sport is my main form of entertainment in my spare time; in particular I try to attend as many live events as possible, the highlight having been the 2012 London Olympic Games. More recently this has also included the FIFA Soccer World Cup and the Heineken European Clubs Cup Final in Rugby Union as well as the annual NFL games held at Wembley Stadium in London. I attend the gym regularly and play golf and tennis when possible, once even winning 3rd prize at the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association Golf tournament. I am a novice skier but I am looking to improve on my annual ski trip! Away from sport I love music and practice singing in my spare time, although there is plenty of room for improvement with that too! I also like to attend live music events. I enjoy food and drink and I find cooking a great way of relaxing away from work with Italian food being my specialty. I have recently discovered whisky and wine tasting and have enjoyed learning more about the pairing with particular foods. I also have an evolving interest in horology.
