I am a Consultant Respiratory Physician with extensive experience in respiratory and general medicine. I began my medical training at the University of St Andrews, graduating with a BSc in Medical Science in 1986, before completing my clinical studies at the University of Manchester and graduating with honours in Medicine in 1989. I obtained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1992 and achieved dual accreditation in Respiratory and General Medicine in 1999.
My specialist training included roles at the Royal Brompton Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital in London. From 2000 to 2023, I worked as Lead Lung Cancer Clinician at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and also practised at Trafford General Hospital until 2010. During my NHS career, I gained extensive experience in acute and specialist respiratory medicine, including non-invasive ventilation, tracheostomy management and high-dependency care. I also established services for BiPAP treatment in type 2 respiratory failure and outpatient management of suspected deep vein thrombosis, and served as Clinical Director for Medicine.
Alongside my NHS practice, I have worked in private healthcare since 2000, caring for both inpatients and outpatients.
I assess and treat a wide range of respiratory conditions, with particular interests in asthma, respiratory allergies, recurrent respiratory infections, bronchiectasis, pneumonia, chronic cough, unexplained breathlessness, disordered breathing and chest wall pain. My MD thesis, completed in 1995, explored the relationship between asthma, pollution and allergens.
I also see patients with sleep apnoea, sarcoidosis, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary embolism, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung nodules. Where appropriate, I can arrange investigations including sleep studies, lung function testing, blood tests and advanced imaging. I also have extensive experience assessing how other medical conditions, including cardiovascular disease, may contribute to breathing symptoms.
While I no longer routinely manage patients with suspected lung cancer, tuberculosis, chronic fatigue syndrome or long COVID, I frequently assess abnormal chest X-rays and arrange further investigations where required.
I believe good medical care begins with listening carefully and understanding each patient's concerns. I take time to explain findings, discuss results and agree a personalised management plan.
My practice is supported by extensive experience in respiratory diagnostics and procedures. I have performed more than 4,000 bronchoscopies, over 100 video-assisted thoracoscopies and numerous chest drain insertions. Alongside my clinical work, I have a longstanding interest in education, training and medicolegal practice, particularly in the areas of clinical negligence, asbestos-related lung disease and life expectancy assessment.
