I am a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Consultant Rheumatologist. At Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, I look after about 1,000 patients with a variety of musculoskeletal complaints, run general rheumatology, specialist adult neuromuscular and combined psoriasis/psoriatic clinics. I am also the principal investigator on a number of clinical trials.

I firmly believe in the importance of clear, open communication with patients and sufferers of musculoskeletal conditions. I see a wide range of rheumatic diseases and closely work alongside a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses and podiatrists. Many rheumatic diseases cannot be cured, but accurate diagnosis and focused management/treatment can help significantly to improve pain, disability and quality of life.

On completing my medical degree at the University of Nottingham in 1996, I carried out medical training in Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester. I trained in Rheumatology in the North West from 2001 - 2009. I completed an Arthritis Research UK Fellowship at The University of Manchester, studying clinical and genetic associations in myositis, a condition which causes disabling symptoms due to inflammation of muscle, and was awarded a PhD in 2007. In 2009 I became a Consultant Rheumatologist and in February 2010 and was awarded a Senior Clinical Lectureship in Rheumatology.

I am employed by The University of Manchester, where I am actively involved with research and the education of medical students and doctors, and am Programme Director for the Clinical Rheumatology MSc Programme. I have authored over 80 research articles in international peer-reviewed journals, have presented many research abstracts in national and international conferences, and am considered to be a global expert in inflammatory myopathy.

I am a member of EuMyoNeT, a European collaborative consortium funded by the Association Française contre les Myopathies, and the International Myositis Genetics Consortium, MYOGEN. As part of EuMyoNeT, I am also chair of Euromyositis.eu, a web-based consortium that collects standardised clinical data in over 30 countries.
