Labial reduction & vaginal repair procedures now available at Spire London East Hospital
01 February 2019
Vaginas come in all shapes and sizes and no two are the same, but sometimes there is discomfort during sexual intercourse, cycling or even walking. Other women are self-conscious about their shape and size. Whether you are unhappy with the way you’ve changed after childbirth, or you’ve always felt this way, we can help.
Labial reduction and vaginal repair surgery is now available at Spire London East Hospital, and our Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Mr Mohammed Masood, explains what is involved in the procedures, and why they may be suitable for you.
Labial reduction surgery
It is very common for women to have concerns about the definition, shape or size of their labia (the inner and outer folds that sit either side of the vagina) for both aesthetic and functional reasons, and therefore may choose to have labial reduction surgery.
Also referred to as ‘Labiaplasty’ or ‘vaginal reshaping’, the procedure is quick and straightforward, and can reduce the size dramatically. Whether a woman has been born with an oversized or irregularly shaped labia, or it has been caused by childbirth or natural ageing, it can cause discomfort and loss of confidence and interfere with everyday tasks and sporting activities.
The surgery only takes 1.5 hours and you can return home the same day, and you should be reasonably mobile after just 1 day. It is recommended that for 2 weeks you sleep on your back, and wait 1 day before having a shower following the procedure. You can return to work and driving after 1-2 weeks, and sexual activity and exercise in just 4-6 weeks. Full recovery is expected to take around 6 weeks.
Vaginal repair surgery
Very often women find that their vaginal muscles lose tone through childbirth and ageing, which can greatly affect sexual intercourse for not only themselves but their partner too, therefore it has become very common for women to choose vaginal repair surgery.
During childbirth the vaginal muscles expand to form the birth canal for the baby; this can leave the surrounding tissues stretched and torn and the muscles loose and weak. The natural ageing process can also cause women to lose tone in their vaginal muscles.
Also referred to as ‘Vaginal Rejuvenation’ or ‘Vaginoplasty’, the procedure tightens the vaginal muscles, perineum (the surface area between the anus and vulva) and surrounding tissues, giving more tone, control and strength to the vaginal muscles.
The surgery only takes 1-2 hours and you can return home the same day, and you should be reasonably mobile and able to shower after just 1 day. You can return to work and driving after 1 week, exercise after 2-4 weeks, and sexual activity after just 4-6 weeks. Full recovery is expected to take around 6 weeks.
