Consultations

Your first appointment will be with a bariatric nurse specialist and is free of charge. Following that you'll have an appointment with a consultant and, if needed, other members of the clinical team.

During your consultation, your consultant will talk to you about your medical history. They'll be able to explain:

  • The procedure and what’s involved - your surgeon may recommend gastric sleeve surgery as a first step
  • The treatment costs and what’s included
  • Risks and complications, including the anaesthetic
  • Your personalised aftercare plan and what this involves, including diet and lifestyle changes

After you decide to go ahead with gastric bypass surgery, you’ll meet a dietitian and a psychologist so they can make further assessments in preparation for your operation and recovery.

You’ll also need to have a pre-operative assessment before you have your operation.

Gastric bypass surgery: your procedure

Your gastric bypass surgery takes one to three hours, but you’ll stay in hospital for approximately two days afterwards.

On the day of your operation, there’ll be a chance to meet your anaesthetist and the surgical team. You’ll have a general anaesthetic for the operation, which involves your surgeon reducing the size of your stomach and connecting it to the lower part of your small intestine.

If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in our lounge while you have your operation.

Your aftercare and recovery

During your stay, you’ll be given painkillers for any pain or discomfort. Your nursing team will make sure you have everything you need at all times.

We’ll have follow-up appointments with you after you leave hospital to check you're recovering and losing weight as expected. Seven to 10 days after your operation, you'll see a bariatric nurse specialist. You'll have appointments with a dietitian at six to eight weeks after and then every 10-12 weeks for one year. Your consultant will have a final appointment with you after one year. If you need any other appointments during this time, they are available to you.
