Dr Nikolas Plevris

I am a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Western General Hospital, NHS Lothian, and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. I provide specialist care across a broad range of gastrointestinal conditions, with particular expertise in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

I assess and treat a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, including IBD, irritable bowel syndrome, reflux, coeliac disease, microscopic colitis, bile acid malabsorption and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. I also investigate symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, swallowing difficulties, altered bowel habit, rectal bleeding, iron deficiency anaemia and unexplained weight loss.

I completed my medical degree and specialist gastroenterology training in Edinburgh. I then undertook an IBD research fellowship at the Edinburgh IBD Unit, leading to a PhD, followed by an advanced clinical fellowship in IBD.

I established Scotland’s first dedicated intestinal ultrasound service. This allows real-time assessment of the bowel without radiation, sedation or bowel preparation. I trained in Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark, am accredited by the International Bowel Ultrasound Group and serve on its Communication Committee.

I am a JAG-accredited endoscopist and perform gastroscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, bowel polyp removal, bowel cancer screening, IBD surveillance and small-bowel capsule endoscopy.

My research focuses on non-invasive disease monitoring and the effectiveness of newer IBD treatments in routine practice. I have published more than 40 peer-reviewed papers, led several clinical studies and received several research awards. I lecture nationally and internationally and am Head of Research and Validation at Chat-IBD, an AI-driven educational platform for clinicians.
