Don't suffer another winter with weight related illness

26 September 2018

Figures published by the NHS show that, without radical action, it will be “overwhelmed” as a result of the increase in obesity. It is well established that health issues increase directly as a result of being overweight, with one in eight suffering from Type 2 diabetes. This condition already costs the health service around £10 billion annually.

Further statistics include [1]:

  • For the period 2016/17, there were 617,000 admissions in NHS hospitals where obesity was a factor[2]. This is an increase of 18% on 2015/16
  • In 2016, 26% of adults were classified as obese. This has increased from 15% in 1993
  • In 2016, 26% of adults and 16% of children consumed five or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day
  • For the period 2016/17, one in five children in Year six, and one in 10 children in Reception were classified as obese

As well as the rise in diabetes other co-morbidity conditions associated with being overweight are also increasing, bucking their previous downward trends. Heart and circulatory disease rates have increased and Professor Sir Nilesh Samani, Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation, has stated:

“The high prevalence of adult obesity in the UK is particularly concerning as, thanks to BHF research, we now know that being overweight leads to damaging changes in the heart’s structure.“

There is no overnight ‘cure’ for obesity and if you are suffering as a result of your weight, you may feel you are not supported with all the facts, or do not want to visit your GP for what can be a very personal issue. But do you know all the options available privately?

With the introduction of the Elipse balloon, a non-surgical six month weight loss treatment, it could be possible to avert health issues and kick-start a person’s weight loss journey. We also perform more traditional surgery as well as the Orbera balloon, a weight loss system that can last up to 12 months.
