Blue eyes

Spire Dunedin Hospital offers diagnosis and medical and surgical treatments for many eye conditions. Our highly regarded consultants provide specialist care in all aspects of ophthalmology, tailored to individual needs, with dedicated examinations rooms, modern diagnostic equipment and state-of-the-art operating theatres.

Private cataract surgery

At Spire Dunedin Hospital we are able to offer private cataract surgery with short waiting times and with a dedicated consultant treating you throughout your stay. Our eye surgeons provide micro-incision modern cataract surgery, with most operations performed under local anaesthetic as a day-case procedure.

Cataracts are opacities in the lens of the eye which affect the vision making it cloudy, as well as causing glare and loss of contrast sensitivity. With modern cataract surgery the lens is replaced with an artificial lens inside the eye. This quick and effective operation can usually return the vision back to normal again.

If you are interested in private cataract surgery either as an insured patient or a self-pay patient we will be happy to provide further details. You will need a referral from your GP or optician and will require an initial consultation with one of our surgeons. The consultant will explain the operation and its benefits to you in more detail, as well as examining your eyes and taking some measurements for the implant you will need, prior to your operation.

As well as cataract surgery our specialists are also able to treat many other eye conditions including glaucoma, macular degeneration, oculo-plastic and lacrimal disorders, diabetic eye disease and corneal diseases.

Private vitreous and retinal surgery

Two of our consultants, Mr Vaughan Tanner and Mr Ahmed El-Amir, offer state-of-the-art vitreoretinal surgery techniques. We are able to offer routine day-case, sutureless, retinal surgery allowing treatment of all vitreoretinal conditions and are the only private hospital in the UK currently offering routine use of fully disposable instruments, thus eliminating the risk of cross-infection.
