Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital celebrates milestone 1,000th Mako robotic surgery
12 June 2025
Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital are delighted to celebrate their 1,000th orthopaedic robotic procedure performed using the Mako robotic arm. This remarkable achievement highlights the transformative impact of the Mako robot in joint replacement surgery.
The Mako robotic arm is a surgical robot that assists surgeons performing complex hip and knee surgery. The robotic technology provides a personalised surgical plan for joint replacement surgery, enhancing patient outcomes and improving recovery time.
When opting for Mako assisted surgery, CT scans are taken to create a 3D model of the hip or knee. The Mako technology then provides each patient with their own personalised surgical plan, bespoke to their specific body shape and surgical requirements. During the procedure the surgeon guides the Mako robotic arm for greater precision and accuracy.
There are many benefits for patients who opt for Mako robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery vs traditional surgery, including faster recovery time and significantly less pain after surgery.
The Mako robotic arm was installed at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital in September 2020, to provide patients with greater treatment choice. The very first procedure was carried out on 5 September 2020, which quickly progressed to 1,000 surgeries in less than 5 years. This significant milestone encapsulates Spire Healthcare’s promise to continue making a positive difference to people’s lives through outstanding personalised care.
