Mr Stavros Karamanakos

I specialise in upper gastrointestinal surgery including General and upper GI surgery including gallbladder surgery, small bowel surgery, stomach surgery, appendicectomy and hernia repairs including inguinal, femoral and abdominal wall hernias. The majority of my operations are performed laparoscopically (keyhole).

I graduated with honours from the Semmelweis University of Medicine in Budapest, Hungary and undertook my surgical training in the UK and Greece. In 2009 I completed my surgical training and gained my CCT in General Surgery from the University Hospital of Patras, Greece. Following that, I was appointed Consultant Surgeon in the department of General Surgery in Patras where I was mostly involved with the management of morbidly obese patients with bariatric surgery. I later completed fellowships in gastrointestinal surgery at Whipps Cross Hospital and Kings College Hospital in London. I have attended advanced laparoscopic surgery courses at the world-renowned centre IRCAD/EITS in Strasbourg, France. I have been awarded a PhD with honours for my work in bariatric surgery and gastrointestinal hormones.

am currently working at the Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital as a General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon. Being the only Upper GI surgeon in the department I deal with a large volume of benign Upper GI pathologies including gallstone disease and anti-reflux surgery. I also lead the emergency service and I have developed many clinical pathways as well as a Surgical Ambulatory Unit which has contribute significantly in the improvement of the service.

My research has been published extensively in renowned medical journals like 'The Annals of Surgery' and I have published dozens of articles in peer-reviewed international medical journals. I am an active Editorial Board Member of many surgical journals, have been an invited speaker in many international surgical and medical meetings and congresses and have received multiple awards and distinctions for my academic work.

I offer a number of procedures and investigations including bile duct explorations (removal of stones from bile ducts), Gastrectomy (removal of stomach), Paraoesophageal hernia repair and  repair of abdominal wall hernias (inguinal, umbilical, incisional).
