Professional profile

I have been a consultant neurosurgeon with a full general practice in adult neurosurgery since 2012. I have developed sub-specialist interests in complex spine and vascular neurosurgery since then. During my training period I completed two years' research as the McKissock lecturer in neurosurgery studying angiogenesis and blood flow in malignant brain tumours. I have published more than 40 papers in peer reviewed journals and coauthored an authoritative textbook, Clinical Cases in Neurosurgery, published by Oxford University Press.

I have a full general on call commitment to both adult and paediatric neurosurgery. I have specific interests in "complex" spine surgery which usually means surgery to the spine involving the use of metalwork to stabilise it, particularly for degenerative disease including back pain, but also for injuries and fractures of the spine. I am the clinical lead for the regional spinal cancer service and perform a large amount of surgery for cancer that has spread to the spine. I also have a sub-specialist interest in vascular neurosurgery for aneurysms of the brain that have either bled or are at risk of bleeding. I perform all my advanced clinical activities in the setting of a multidisciplinary environment and am one of the founder members of the spinal MDT at St George's Hospital where both NHS and private patients can be discussed. I have a strong emphasis on clinical governance and work with a few companies in the field of clinical negligence.

I perform around 400 operations per year and the majority of my practice is spinal surgery. I have placed nearly 1000 thoracolumbar pedicle screws as a consultant and audit my own practice carefully. I have experience in minimally invasive and percutaneous spine surgery and continue to train in these areas as an established consultant.

I am the clinical lead for neurosurgery at St George's Hospital and have been clinically responsible for leading innovation and service development since 2013. I have helped set up the spinal MDT there in compliance with the national spine service framework and have helped lead the spinal cancer service to be one of the most outstanding in the south of England. I am the clinical lead for neurotrauma at St George's which is one of the four major trauma centres in London.

I was appointed Professor of Neurosurgery to Cangzhou People's Hospital, China, in 2016. I teach medical students at St George's University of London and also teach on postgraduate courses in the nuances of spinal surgery to trainee surgeons as well as consultants.
