Mum-of-three Yvonne Bowkett has become the first dedicated Paediatric Lead Nurse at Spire Parkway Hospital.
Thirty-eight-year-old Yvonne moved into paediatric nursing 13 years ago when she joined Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Her move to Spire Parkway Hospital is the hospital’s first step towards broadening services offered to children and young people aged between 3 and 18 years. Children under 3 years old may also be seen in our Outpatient Department for procedures such as tongue tie repair.
“The hospital has always treated children, but we plan to expand the sort of treatments we can provide to include a wide range of surgical procedures. These include ingrowing toenail surgery, eye surgery, circumcision and orthopaedic procedures.
“It is an ambitious move for Spire Parkway Hospital and I am certainly viewing this as a major challenge. There are many things we have to introduce in order to meet requirements for certain types of paediatric surgery, but things are going well and we hope to be fully on track early in the New Year,” said Yvonne.
At the moment the hospital does children’s work in a variety of areas including:
- grommet insertion for glue ear (ENT)
- ear pinning
- knee arthroscopies
- plastic surgery procedures such as cyst removal.
