Professional profile

Having graduated from Downing College Cambridge, My undergraduate training in medicine was completed at Birmingham University in 1975. My postgraduate training was initially in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology but in 1981, I was awarded a CRC Training fellowship in gynaecological cancer. This lead to me being awarded an MD in 1985.

After returning to general Obstetrics and Gynaecology for a short period as a senior registrar, I took up the appointment of Senior Lecturer in the University Department in 1986. I became a Reader in 1992 and then a personal chair of Gynaecological Oncology in 1996 and took up the Lawson-Tait Chair in Gynaecological Oncology in 2002.

My main clinical interests are the surgical management of cancer, pre-cancerous conditions of the cervix and vulva and since 1990, I have offered a vulval disorders service. This service attracts a large number of referrals from both within and outside the Birmingham area. Although my practice is now quite specialised, I have over 20 years’ experience as a practicing surgical gynaecologist during which time, I have managed a wide variety of challenging conditions in most areas of gynaecology. In addition to general gynaecology, I have an interest in ovarian cancer symptoms, ovarian cyst symptoms, and uterine polyps.

I am now the clinical director of the Pan- Birmingham Gynaecological Cancer Centre based at City Hospital, this is one of the largest UK Gynaecological Cancer Centres and offers a full range of modern treatments for female cancers.

I am the immediate past president of the British Gynaecological Cancer Society and have served on the executive councils of both the International Gynaecological Cancer Society and the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology. I am an editor of the National Guidelines for Cervical Screening and a senior editor for the International Journal of Gynaecological Cancer.

I have published over 130 peer reviewed articles, edited 14 medical textbooks and contributed more than 30 chapters to various medical textbooks.
