Respiratory Consultant
MBBS, MRCP (UK) Respiratory
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Dr Iyad Ismail at Spire include:
I am a Respiratory Consultant, who graduated from Jordan University of Science & Technology in 2000 and was awarded a merit scholarship throughout medical school by the United Nations (UNRWA). I completed my training in the UK (CCT) in respiratory and general medicine in 2014. I complemented the training with a fellowship in interventional procedures from Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
I now practice as a respiratory consultant at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, having worked within the trust since 2015. Since then, I have thrived to introduce innovative practice in respiratory medicine.
I am the Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull (HGS) lung cancer lead, focusing on patient outcomes from early diagnosis to treatment.
I have a specialist interest in pleural disease as well as large airway disease; tracheobronchomalacia and excessive dynamic airway collapse (TBM/EDAC), these conditions can sometimes be misdiagnosed as asthma or COPD - which would be treated differently.
I am actively involved in research related to lung cancer and pleural disease, this further helps to provide evidence-based practice, which benefits patient outcomes.
The treatments I provide include; thoracic ultrasound, bronchoscopy, end-bronchial ultrasound (EBUS) pleural aspiration (diagnostic and therapeutic), an indwelling pleural catheter (IPC) and intercostal chest drain.
I manage general respiratory conditions including cough, breathlessness, asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, sarcoidosis, respiratory failure and obstructive sleep apnoea as well as large airway disease; tracheobronchomalacia and excessive dynamic airway collapse (TBM/EDAC).

In my leisure time, I enjoy playing tennis with my son and value family time. I have family members in four different countries (Jordan, America, Bahrain and UAE) which keeps life interesting, having a lot to look forward to. I enjoy watching football and strongly support Liverpool. I have acquired LFC membership and along with my son, we try to get to some matches at Anfield in Liverpool when time allows.
My overseas experience has helped me work in the NHS in many ways. Working in Jordan, a country known for its limited resources, meant I had to provide the best and safest possible patient care with the available logistics.
I am constantly self-critical of my practice against patient outcomes. This has helped me develop and refine both my skills and knowledge. I have on so many occasions called patients to check on their progress after an introduction of a new treatment or to inform them of test results.
