From breathless to boundless: Peter’s life restored through complex heart surgery at Spire Nottingham

At 73, Peter thought his days of big adventures were mostly behind him, part time work, long walks and the occasional fishing trip filled his weeks. Then, in mid 2023, a creeping breathlessness began to steal the simple pleasures he loved. He blamed a bout of COVID and tried to carry on. When the breathlessness worsened, a visit to his GP changed everything. What he thought was a simple respiratory issue turned out to be a heart problem instead.
Peter made an appointment to discuss his symptoms and undergo routine investigations with Dr Imran Ansari, Consultant Cardiologist at Spire Nottingham Hospital; however, a simple auscultation examination led to a same-day urgent echocardiogram performed by Dr Ansari, which resulted in the diagnosis of critical heart valve disease: Peter had a defective aortic valve and needed intervention. He chose to go privately to Spire Nottingham, not because he wanted to bypass the NHS, but because he felt fortunate to be able to pay for care so that NHS resources could remain available for someone who needed them more. That generosity sits at the heart of his story.
Peter went on to make history at Spire Nottingham as one the hospital’s early patients to undergo Aortic Valve Replacement surgery, marking an important milestone for the cardiac team and the development of advanced heart care at the hospital.
Dr Imran Ansari, Consultant Cardiologist at Spire Nottingham Hospital, said: “Peter’s case is a reminder that unexplained breathlessness should never be ignored. Early investigation and referral made it possible for him to receive timely, life changing treatment.”
What started as a valve replacement soon became far more serious in the operating theatre. Surgeons discovered Peter’s aorta was dangerously thin and enlarged, and the planned procedure quickly became a complex open heart repair, led by Mr Giovanni Mariscalco, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, and the Spire Nottingham cardiac team. Peter remembers waking up woozy but pain free, surprised at how quickly the team had him breathing on his own and moving. Within days he was walking the ward; within weeks he felt a clarity he hadn’t known for years. No more stopping to catch his breath on holiday walks. No more giving up on longer days out. “They gave my life back,” he said.
Mr Giovanni Mariscalco, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, said: “Peter’s operation required complex decision-making on the day, and being able to safely adapt the surgical plan is exactly why having a specialist cardiac team and infrastructure in place is so important.”
Fishing has always been Peter’s great love, and salmon is his passion. “Salmon fishing is a different level,” he added. A few months after surgery, he returned to the river for his first post op trip and landed a beautiful salmon that day. For him, it wasn’t just a catch; it was proof that he’d regained his strength, his stamina, and the joy of being outdoors with friends, rods, and the familiar ritual of casting into wild water.
Peter’s message is simple and urgent: if something in your health changes and you can’t explain it, get it checked. Early diagnosis made all the difference for him. He praises Spire Nottingham for the rapid coordination from GP to diagnostics, the calm, expert care in intensive care, and a surgical team ready to handle unexpected challenges.
Natasha Young, Hospital Director at Spire Nottingham Hospital, said: “Few private hospitals are equipped to deliver complex surgery such as open-heart procedures. Peter’s case, one of our early Aortic Valve Replacement surgeries, highlights what makes Spire Nottingham different, combining the facilities, specialist expertise and multidisciplinary teams needed to safely manage highly complex cardiac surgery in a private hospital setting. We are incredibly proud to see patients regain their quality of life through this level of care.”
