- From Chest Pain to the French Alps: A Journey of Heart Health
Spire Nottingham Hospital is celebrating a remarkable patient success story that underscores the life-saving power of early detection and modern cardiology. When Philip Storer, a project director in engineering consultancy and an avid mountain hiker, experienced chest pain during a hike, he acted quickly, a decision that changed his life.
Concerned about the episode and his previously difficult-to-control high blood pressure, Philip sought specialist assessment. Through his private health insurance, Philip accessed Spire Nottingham’s advanced cardiology services, where he was treated by Consultant Cardiologist Dr Sanjay Bhandari and Dr Bhavik Modi. Dr Bhandari performed a cardiac stress MRI. This cutting-edge scan revealed mild heart muscle weakness and reduced blood flow in a coronary artery—issues that standard tests might have missed. His high blood pressure was also reviewed and optimised as part of his overall cardiac treatment plan. Thanks to rapid diagnosis and intervention, what could have been a serious health crisis was resolved with a successful stent procedure, performed by Dr Modi, Consultant Cardiologist specialising in interventional cardiology, within eight weeks of his first symptoms.
Just six weeks after treatment, Philip was back hiking in the French Alps, proving the effectiveness of modern cardiac interventions. Reflecting on his experience, Philip shared his gratitude to the team at Spire Nottingham, saying: “You don’t know you had a problem until the problem’s over. Just do exercise. If you’ve got anything wrong, you’ll find out quicker.”

Dr Bhandari, Consultant Cardiologist at Spire Nottingham Hospital, said: “Advanced imaging like cardiac stress MRI allows us to detect subtle changes that traditional tests might miss. Acting quickly can make all the difference in preventing serious complications.” He was joined by Dr Modi, Consultant Cardiologist, who added: “Our goal is to provide patients with rapid access to diagnosis and treatment. Philip’s case shows how early intervention and personalised care can restore health and confidence.”
Natasha Young, Hospital Director at Spire Nottingham Hospital, commented:
“Spire Nottingham is proud to have a dedicated cardiology centre equipped to manage the full spectrum of heart conditions. From advanced diagnostics to complex interventions, our investment in state-of-the-art technology and expert teams ensures patients receive fast, safe, and high-quality care when they need it most.”
Philip’s story is a powerful reminder that proactive health management and staying active can make all the difference in detecting and treating heart conditions early.
