Latest robotic-assisted knee and hip surgery available in Norfolk
07 July 2026
People across Norfolk requiring knee and hip replacements can now access the latest generation robotic assisted surgery, which enhances precision and personalisation.
Now available at Spire Norwich Hospital, Mako robotic-assisted surgery supports surgeons by creating a personalised surgical plan based on each patient's unique anatomy. Using a 3D CT-based model, the technology enables surgeons to plan procedures with greater accuracy and assists them during surgery, helping to optimise implant positioning while preserving healthy bone and tissue.

Patients undergoing Mako-assisted joint replacement surgery can benefit from a highly tailored approach to treatment, which is minimally invasive and can enhance recovery times.
The technology will be used by Spire Norwich Hospital's experienced orthopaedic consultants, who have undergone specialist training in robotic-assisted joint replacement procedures.
Mr Sim Johal, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement surgery at Spire Norwich Hospital, said: "The Mako surgical system represents an exciting development in joint replacement surgery. The system allows us to create a patient specific surgical plan and provides real-time data during the procedure, helping us achieve a high level of accuracy. Ultimately, this enables us to deliver personalised care tailored to each patient's individual needs."
Joint replacement surgery can be life-changing for patients experiencing chronic pain and reduced mobility caused by arthritis and other degenerative joint conditions. The arrival of Mako robotic-assisted surgery strengthens Spire Norwich Hospital's orthopaedic offering and further enhances the range of treatments available to patients seeking expert musculoskeletal care.
Nayab Haider, Hub Hospital Director at Spire Norwich Hospital, said: "We are delighted to introduce Mako robotic-assisted surgery at Spire Norwich Hospital. This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to providing patients across Norfolk and the wider East of England access to pioneering healthcare technologies and outstanding clinical outcomes. By introducing Mako, we are empowering our orthopaedic consultants with advanced tools that support precision, personalisation and innovation in patient care."
