Mr Vivek Chitre (MS, FRCSEd, FRCS General Surgery) is a Consultant Surgeon at the James Paget University Hospital, Spire Norwich Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Norwich Medical School of the UEA. He consults privately at Spire Norwich Hospital and at the Coastal Clinic in Gorleston.
He is a specialist in Gastrointestinal, Laparoscopic & Bariatric Surgery. Mr Chitre is part of Spire Norwich Hospital’s Weight Loss Surgery Team, which offers a range of bariatric operations. Patients who wish to explore the option of weight-loss surgery have the benefit of a multi-disciplinary team with over 10 years experience. Apart from bariatric surgery, his special interest is in Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD), which is an increasingly common condition. Mr Chitre offers laparoscopic (keyhole) anti-reflux surgery after a detailed evaluation in suitable cases. Laparoscopic surgery forms a major part of Mr Chitre’s workload. This includes laparoscopic cholecystectomy (removal of the gall bladder) and more advanced laparoscopic procedures such as exploration of the common bile duct & splenectomy (removal of the spleen). Mr Chitre offers keyhole surgery for all types of hernias, such as inguinal & femoral (groin) hernias, incisional hernias (hernias occurring after previous operations) and hiatus hernias. In addition to these special interests, Mr Chitre is experienced in a wide range of general surgery. He routinely carries out diagnostic gastroscopy in the investigation of upper gastrointestinal disorders.
Mr Chitre is an Examiner for the MRCS examination of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and also serves as a Regional Surgical Advisor for the College. He is a PBL Tutor at the Norwich Medical School (UEA), and is involved in the training of both undergraduate & postgraduate medical trainees. His research interests include GORD, paraoesophageal hernia and incisional hernia.

Mr Chitre lives in Norwich with his wife and two young children. With school-age children and a wife who is also a busy hospital consultant, life outside work is sometimes chaotic but always fun. Mr Chitre plays several musical instruments (badly) and is making painfully slow progress with formal piano lessons.Back to top
