After eight years at University, an MSc in Sports Medicine and two years of junior doctor placements Mr Smith undertook ten years of surgical training based in Edinburgh. He was awarded the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in 2011. His NHS practice is at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and is dedicated to foot and ankle surgery.

Before starting work as an Orthopaedic Consultant he completed four specialist fellowships. These included six months at the Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit and an AO trauma fellowship in Seattle, a unit widely recognised as the home of foot and ankle trauma surgery. He was later awarded a twelve month fellowship at the world renowned Vancouver Trauma Unit where he was taught both trauma and sports injury surgery by world leaders in their respective fields. Finally he spent six months at the Fortius Clinic, London with Mr J Calder specialising in foot and ankle surgery.
