Mr Ajit Shetty

I am a specialist hip and knee replacement surgeon with expertise in both routine and complex joint replacement surgery. Alongside standard hip and knee replacements, I treat more complex conditions including developmental hip problems such as dysplasia, and arthritis linked to conditions including Perthes disease and avascular necrosis.

I also perform complex hip and knee procedures that may require patient-specific instrumentation (PSI) or custom-made implants designed for an individual patient’s anatomy and needs. In addition, I was one of the first surgeons in the north of England to introduce robotic-assisted hip replacement surgery.

My specialist training was completed at the Joint Replacement Unit at the New Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh before I took up my current consultant post in 2005.

As well as primary joint replacement surgery, I undertake hip and knee revision procedures to correct painful or failing joint replacements. I also perform trauma surgery, mainly involving lower limb injuries, and carry out keyhole procedures where appropriate.

I provide treatments including Arthrosamid® injections, MAKO robotic-assisted hip surgery and stem cell treatment for avascular necrosis of the hip.

Alongside my clinical work, I am actively involved in teaching and training. I am a member of the Panel of Examiners for the FRCS (Trauma and Orthopaedics) examination, the qualification required for orthopaedic consultants in the UK.

I continue to keep up to date with developments in lower limb joint replacement through national and international courses and meetings, and I have presented research at joint replacement conferences.
