Professor Aali Sheen

I am an internationally recognised Consultant General Surgeon specialising in hernia surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction, chronic groin pain and sportsman’s groin (inguinal disruption). I was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary in 2005, where I developed extensive expertise in complex abdominal wall and gastrointestinal surgery and worked until 2024.

I have established an international reputation in hernia surgery and is widely recognised for my work in the diagnosis and treatment of sportsman’s groin and groin injuries in elite athletes. I regularly treat professional sportsmen and women from across the UK and overseas and provides specialist services to more than 50 professional organisations and clubs.

My clinical practice encompasses all aspects of hernia surgery, including inguinal, ventral, incisional and recurrent hernias, abdominal wall reconstruction, mesh complications and chronic postoperative pain. I am particularly experienced in managing complex and challenging cases referred from other surgeons.

I have made significant academic contributions to the field of hernia surgery. I was a member of the international group that helped redefine sportsman’s groin as inguinal disruption and contributed to the first international consensus statement on the condition. I subsequently developed the SPoRT (Sportsman’s Groin Rating Tool) Score, which assists in the assessment and management of athletes presenting with groin pain.

I have authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, including randomised controlled trials, consensus statements, international guidelines and invited reviews. I  also developed innovative surgical techniques, including the Manchester Groin Repair, specifically designed for the treatment of inguinal disruption in athletes.

I served as President of the British Hernia Society between 2020 and 2022 and was Congress President of the European Hernia Society Annual Meeting, held in Manchester in 2022. I continue to lecture extensively both nationally and internationally and is regarded as a leading authority in abdominal wall surgery.

In recognition of my contributions to surgery, research and education, I have held honorary professorial appointments with both the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University and was awarded a Visiting Professorship in the United States for my expertise in hernia surgery.
