Mr Felice Granato

Consultant Thoracic Surgeon

MD, PhD, FRCS (ad eundem)

I have specialised in thoracic surgery since joining the Specialist Register in 2010 and have been a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust since 2017. I have performed more than 6,000 surgical procedures, including approximately 350 robotic thoracic operations. I am the Robotic Thoracic Surgery Lead at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and a recognised robotic surgery proctor, supporting and training other consultant surgeons. My practice combines extensive experience in complex thoracic surgery with a strong focus on minimally invasive and robotic techniques, personalised treatment and clear communication with patients and their families.

I provide surgical assessment and treatment for the full range of adult thoracic conditions, including lung cancer, pulmonary nodules, secondary lung tumours, mediastinal and thymic lesions, pleural disease, pneumothorax, emphysema, chest wall conditions and disorders of the diaphragm. I perform robotic, video-assisted thoracoscopic and open thoracic procedures, including lobectomy, segmentectomy, wedge resection, pneumonectomy, thymectomy, mediastinal tumour resection, bullectomy, pleurodesis, lung volume reduction surgery, diaphragm plication and repair of diaphragmatic hernias. I also undertake diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy and the investigation and treatment of pleural effusions.

Over the course of my surgical career, I have performed more than 6,000 operative procedures, including approximately 350 robotic thoracic resections. I have extensive experience in major pulmonary resection, anatomical segmentectomy, complex and extended lung resection, mediastinal surgery, surgery for emphysema and pneumothorax, and operations involving the chest wall and diaphragm. I routinely use robotic and video-assisted thoracoscopic techniques, while retaining extensive open surgical experience for complex cases in which this provides the safest or most appropriate approach.

I served as Clinical Lead for Thoracic Surgery at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust from 2022 until March 2025. In this role, I had responsibility for the clinical management and development of the thoracic surgical service, including clinical governance, patient safety, theatre utilisation, workforce planning and the introduction and expansion of new surgical pathways and technologies.

I am the Robotic Thoracic Surgery Lead at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and the Trust’s thoracic robotic surgery proctor. I lead the continued development of the robotic thoracic programme and support the training and mentoring of consultant surgeons, fellows and surgical trainees. I am also actively involved in clinical audit, research, surgical education and the evaluation and introduction of new minimally invasive technologies.

In addition to my NHS practice, I work as a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at The Alexandra Hospital in Manchester. I also act as a robotic thoracic surgery proctor, supporting established consultant surgeons and surgical teams in developing safe and effective robotic thoracic surgery programmes.

I believe that patients should fully understand their diagnosis and all available treatment options before making decisions about surgery. I provide clear and balanced advice, including discussion of non-surgical alternatives where appropriate, and tailor treatment to each patient’s individual circumstances and priorities. I work closely with respiratory physicians, oncologists, radiologists, anaesthetists and other specialist surgeons to provide coordinated multidisciplinary care, particularly for patients with complex thoracic conditions.
