Mr Damir Kosutic

Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon

MD, PhD, FRCS (Plast), Fellow of EBOPRAS

I am a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon specialising in natural tissue breast reconstruction, lymphoedema microsurgery, skin cancer reconstruction and complex microsurgery. I work full-time at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, one of Europe’s largest cancer centres, where I help lead the development of complex microsurgical reconstruction services.

My expertise includes DIEP flap, PAP flap and thigh flap breast reconstruction, reconstruction following melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer surgery, and lymphoedema microsurgery. I was trained in lymphoedema surgery by Professor Cheng from Taiwan, a pioneer in this field. I also treat patients requiring facial palsy and facial reconstruction, migraine headache treatment, liposuction, lipofilling, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), and reconstruction of the limbs, chest wall and abdominal wall following sarcoma surgery.

I completed advanced fellowships in breast reconstruction and perforator flap surgery with internationally recognised specialists including Professor Jaume Masia in Barcelona and Dr Robert Allen in New York, the inventor of the DIEP flap procedure. I also completed a microsurgical fellowship at Imperial College NHS, Charing Cross Hospital in London.

My training included working with leading perforator flap surgeons around the world, including Professor Ming-Huei Cheng in Taiwan and Professor Jaume Masia in Barcelona. This helped develop my specialist interest in complex microvascular reconstruction, particularly breast reconstruction, lymphoedema microsurgery, and limb and facial reconstruction.

Alongside my clinical work, I hold a PhD and a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences and previously worked as an Assistant Professor at the University of Maribor in Slovenia.

I have published 43 scientific papers in international plastic surgery journals, including research into the use of CT angiograms and MRI scans to improve planning for perforator flap breast reconstruction surgery. My published work has been cited more than 160 times in medical literature.

I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the European Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. I am also a full member of EURAPS (European Association of Plastic Surgeons), and in 2011 I was awarded both the EURAPS Scholarship and an HCA Scholarship.

My approach is centred on providing clear advice, personalised care and treatment plans tailored to each patient’s needs and goals.
