Professional profile

I am a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon specialising in treating patients with disorders of the shoulder and the elbow, based at University Hospital of South Manchester. I trained in London and Oxford before moving to the North West and was awarded fellowships to train at internationally recognised shoulder and elbow units in Sheffield and Wrightington in the UK as well as visiting surgeons in Europe and the United States. I have considerable experience in treating painful, arthritic, stiff and unstable elbow conditions and have recently been recognised for this by being selected to visit the highly respected Mayo Clinic in America.

I specialise in advanced keyhole (arthroscopic) surgical techniques to treat conditions affecting the shoulder and the elbow as well as open joint replacement surgery to treat arthritic conditions. I treat rotator cuff tears, treatment of impingement syndrome, surgery for shoulder impingement, treatment of frozen shoulder/adhesive capsulitis, clicking shoulder/elbow, calcific tendinitis, platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatments, surgery for shoulder dislocation, shoulder joint replacement for arthritis, elbow joint replacement for arthritis, tennis/golfer's elbow and elbow instability/dislocation.

I am committed to furthering the development of elbow surgery and education in the UK and have recently become a founding member of the British Elbow Club. I am also involved in training advanced shoulder arthroscopic skills on national training courses for young surgeons. I am co-coordinating research programmes with the the Manchester Institute of Bio Technology at the University of Manchester.

I have an active interest in the outcome of my treatments and analyse the outcomes of my surgery by collecting shoulder and elbow patient recorded outcome measures (PROMS) before and after surgery. I am also involved in research into shoulder and elbow conditions.

I was awarded the Royal College of Surgeons of England research fellowship into the genetic basis of shoulder arthritis and carried out research at the University of Oxford and was awarded my MD thesis. My current research interests are relating to treatment of the infected total elbow arthroplasty; outcome of synthetic ligament reconstruction of the elbow; platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy for elbow pain; prehabilitation for elective shoulder and elbow surgery and use of outcome scores in shoulder surgery. I continue to present my research at national and international scientific meetings, which enables me to be at the forefront of shoulder and elbow surgery.
