Dr Sanjay Banypersad
MBChB, BMedSci (Hons), MRCP (UK), MD (UCL)
"Patients have everything under one roof from consultation, tests and procedures. The staff enjoy their work and are passionate about it which reflects in their warm and welcoming approach."
I am a Consultant Cardiologist and the lead for cardiac imaging at the East Lancashire NHS Trust since 2015.
I qualified from the University of Sheffield in 2002, on the background of a distinction BMedSci (Hons) for my research in thrombosis in 1999 which I presented in the USA. I have trained in several national centres of excellence in London, including the Hammersmith Hospital (2005-06), the Royal Free Hospital (2010-13) and the Heart Hospital (2010-13), as well as Wythenshawe Hospital (2008-09) and Manchester Royal Infirmary (2014-15) more locally.
I regularly assess patients with chest pains, breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness and blackouts in my clinics. Imaging of the heart is frequently crucial in establishing the diagnosis and my specialist area of expertise is in all aspects of cardiac imaging. I perform weekly sessions of cardiac MRI, CT coronary angiograms and all aspects of both transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography in my routine clinical practice.
My work has been recognised and honoured with several distinguished international awards, including from the American Heart Association (2013) and Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (2014) and I continue to be invited to give presentations and chair educational sessions at conferences. I received my MD degree from UCL in 2015 and, to date, I have over 20 publications to my name in various peer-reviewed medical journals, with the second highest ResearchGate score in the entire ELHT NHS Trust.
I have authored the only examination book endorsed by the British Society of Echocardiography entitled 'Successful Accreditation in Echocardiography' published by Wiley-Blackwell in 2012, which continues to be widely used throughout the UK and Europe. I also consider myself very fortunate to have had the unique and humbling honour to have been invited to present my work directly to HRH The Princess Royal in July 2011 at the Royal Free Hospital in London.
I have never lost sight of the importance of communicating effectively to all my patients in order that they always leave the consultation with an understanding of their problems and the best way to manage them. For this reason, my independently-collated (myL2P) feedback from patients and staff alike was 4.97/5.
