I am a Consultant Cardiologist at the OrthTeam Centre and an expert in sports cardiology. I look after people with a heart condition, ranging from those who are keen to start exercising to elite athletes.

I graduated from the University of Cambridge (Emmanuel College) in 2006 and spent time at MIT and Harvard University, USA. I then moved to Oxford for specialist training. I undertook a Masters in Medical Leadership achieving a distinction, at the Royal College of Physicians. I attained competitive funding through cardiac risk in the Young charity to undertake my PhD in inherited heart diseases and sports cardiology at St George’s University of London where I was subsequently appointed NIHR Clinical Lecturer to complete my training before being appointed consultant and presidential fellow in Manchester.

My NHS practice is at Wythenshawe and Manchester Royal Infirmary Hospitals, and I am a Presidential Fellow at the University of Manchester. I am also currently establishing a research and clinical network for the athlete’s heart in the North West of England and beyond.

I am the lead cardiologist for a number of elite sports teams including Manchester City, Leeds United and Burnley football clubs, as well as British Cycling. I also work closely with Manchester United and am regularly involved in the cardiac care of athletes for Team GB, English Institute of Sport (EIS) and numerous professional football, cricket and rugby clubs. I am closely involved in the medical set up for mass public events such as the London Marathon and have been medical director for the World Triathlon Championships.

My research is internationally recognised and focuses on adaptations of the athlete’s heart. I have undertaken interviews and documentaries for the BBC News at Ten and ITV, as well as regularly being interviewed for my work in leading newspapers.

Sports cardiology, inherited heart diseases, cardiomyopathy, myocarditis and sudden arrhythmic death syndrome.

I am part of the sports cardiology nucleus for the European Association of Preventative Cardiology, a working branch of the European Society of Cardiology. I have more than 80 peer-reviewed publications and co-authored and contributed to numerous books in cardiology and medicine.

I am currently studying the predictors of cardiomyopathy, particularly among black athletes who appear to be at a higher risk of sudden cardiac death. My work to date has achieved Young Investigator Award and best abstract prizes at international conferences including European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Update 2019, ESC 2017, American College of Cardiology 2016 and European Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention 2015. I’ve also been published in leading medical journals including the New England Journal of Medicine and top cardiology journals including Circulation and Journal of American College of Cardiology.
