Professional profile

I trained as a doctor at Southampton University, qualifying in 1997. I have been working in paediatrics since 1998, both in the Wessex health region and in north London.

I began training as a neonatologist and retain a certain fondness for, and confidence with, the babies among my patients. But I missed the play with the toddlers, the cheekiness of the primary school children, the challenges and concern of the thoughtful secondary school pupils and the breadth of the work of the general paediatrician.

My first NHS consultant post was at Barts Health (Whipps Cross site) where I worked for eight years as a paediatrician with an interest in emergency paediatrics. I moved to the Homerton University Hospital NHS Trust in 2017 to take up a post as a general paediatrician with expertise in cardiology. I bring this breadth of knowledge and experience to Spire London East Hospital, where I am happy to see young people of all ages with their parents in the relaxed, informal environment of my outpatients’ clinic.

I maintain three websites. The first - www.northlondonpaediatrician.co.uk - contains some frequently asked questions on children’s health, answered in non-medical jargon, as well as information on where I work privately, my fees, and so on. I set up the second website - www.paediatricpearls.co.uk – in 2009 to support my role training junior doctors and to enhance the continuing professional development of GPs and other health professionals working with children. The third website is for the charity for which I am a trustee and senior volunteer instructor. We teach newborn care in West Africa and train local instructors (see www.nicheinternational.org.uk).

Personal Profile

I came to medicine late having originally completed a degree in French and Philosophy and worked and lived for a while on an Inner Hebridean island in Scotland where I also set up my first folk band. I was heavily involved in Tall Ship sailing at that time and went on to fund my medical training by working as a Tall Ship cook during all my university holidays. The 100 hour weeks we used to do when first qualified as doctors were nothing to the ardours of my sailing days where I worked the same hours with the added delight of feeling sick most of the time.

The advent of a family brought an end to my sailing days and the folk singing, I am afraid, and I now spend non-work time looking after my 3 children and 2 step-children and cleaning out the goldfish tank.
