While reaching a healthy weight can take commitment, Jennie Carter, our Performance Nutritionist shares some useful tips that might make the task easier.
Jennie’s top tips on how to kick start a healthy 2016 with the foods we eat:
Start with a high protein breakfast, chicken, tomatoes and peppers omelette, poached eggs on a slice of seeded bread or natural yogurt, chopped almonds and berries. Avoid cereals that change the colour of the milk!
Include 5 cups of green tea during the day – it’s a great source of antioxidants and may even help your metabolism.
Fill your plate with healthy foods first, then add vegetables and salad, then lean meat and fish and finally potatoes, pasta or rice.
Try and drink one green smoothie a day to boost vitamin and mineral intake.
‘If you bite it, write it’ keep a log of your dietary intake. Keep a food diary or log it into your phone app, such as #MyFitnessPal.
Keep hydrated as it vital for energy levels – aim for 2-3 litres of water a day. Dehydration can cause tiredness, headaches and a loss of appetite. However, avoid flavoured water; there can be up to 27 teaspoons of sugar in just 1 large bottle! Instead, just add a slice of fresh lemon or lime to add natural flavour.
Make sure you have 1 treat night a week; this will help you keep on track of your nutritional goals during the week.
Why is exercise so important?
“Nutrition and exercise work synergistically – aim for 30 minutes a day. Walk instead of driving and take the stairs not the lift. Increasing muscle mass increases metabolism so in turn helps you to burn more calories – even when resting!”
