David Heeley embarks on a new chapter of charitable works following knee surgery at Spire Little Aston Hospital

19 September 2023

Dave Heeley OBE, a revered local charitable hero, and father-of-three from West Bromwich, famously known as "Blind Dave", continues to inspire as he receives his second knee replacement at Spire Little Aston Hospital. This remarkable individual, who has the distinction of being the first blind person to complete the seven-marathon challenge, is set to undertake another surgical procedure, following the successful recovery from a Mako robotic knee replacement performed by orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Mark Dunbar, in October 2022.

The Mako robotic knee replacement surgery has indeed been a turning point in Dave’s philanthropic journey. It not only facilitated a faster recovery but also empowered him to pursue his charitable activities with newfound energy and determination.

Dave, who is eager to push his boundaries further once recovered from his second surgery, mentioned, "After undergoing a robotic knee replacement last year, and completing even more charity challenges, including walking Hadrian’s Wall, I’m ready to have my other knee repaired so I can raise even more money for charity and push myself further."

Dave’s Consultant Surgeon, Mr Dunbar commented, “We are looking forward to facilitating Mr Heeley's next steps towards full recovery. It's indeed an honour to participate in the process of helping him achieve his goals as he touches the lives of so many in such a positive way.”

Since the initial surgery, Dave has been nothing short of an inspiration, undertaking a series of formidable challenges. These include a 140-mile bike journey from Yorkshire to the Black Country, and a remarkable 84-mile trek coast-to-coast of Northern England, starting from Wallsend in the east and traversing 135km over five days to reach Bowness in the west.

Reflecting on his charitable milestones, an enthusiastic Dave remarked, "The support and care I received from Mr Dunbar and the team at Spire Little Aston have indeed been a catalyst in my journey, enabling me to expand the horizons of what I can achieve in my charity work”.
