Total Hip Replacement with Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Paul Gaston

I would like to thank Mr Paul Gaston and all the nursing and auxiliary staff at the Murrayfield Spire Hospital for their professionalism, kindness and understanding they all afforded me during my stay for my total hip replacement in October 2015.

This was my second hip replacement - the first one, on my left leg, was done as a surface to surface operation in September 2001 in Glasgow.  The experience was somewhat traumatic and the thought of having a total hip replacement done on my right leg was something which I was completely dreading.  However, from the outset, Mr Gaston put me at ease.  He was very professional and explained the situation very clearly in a manner which a lay person could understand.  I was totally reassured that this was the best course of action, and he was quite right!  I have to say that my experience in the Spire Murrayfield Hospital was totally different to my experience 14 years before in Glasgow!  The operation itself went very smoothly and my recovery rate was much quicker than I had anticipated.

From my initial consultation wit Mr Gaston to my stay in the Murrayfield, I felt that all the staff gave a personal touch to my care which makes all the difference when you are feeling unwell and vulnerable.  I also felt reassured by Mr Gaston when he popped in three or four times during my stay to see how I was progressing. The fact that I had my own room which was very peaceful and quiet made my recovery much faster.

Having a major operation like a total hip replacement is not an easy decision, but in my case was definitely the correct one! The pain which I felt daily disappeared immediately and the discomfort of the operation itself did not last very long at all.

I know that I will have to have my surface to surface hip replacement re-done very soon and I am sure Mr Gaston and his team will do an excellent job.  I now feel much more positive about having it re-done after my experience in the Murrayfield in October 2015, and when it is time, I will not hesitate as I know the outcome is so positive.
