I was appointed as a Consultant General and Hepato-pancreatico-biliary (HPB) surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in June 2017.
I am a University of Edinburgh medical graduate and undertook preregistration House Officer posts in Edinburgh. I then trained for a year in Accident and Emergency at Guys and St Thomas' Hospital, London, where I taught Anatomy under Professor Harold Ellis. I completed both basic and higher surgical training in the London Postgraduate School of Surgery, rotating through The Royal Marsden, Chelsea and Westminster, Hammersmith, Charing Cross, and the Royal Surrey County Hospitals.
During this training, I conducted laboratory and clinical research at Hammersmith Hospital into the role of laparoscopic liver resection and hypoxia in liver cancer and was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine from Imperial College London.
I pursued periods of advanced specialist out-of-programme experience in West and South East Scotland. I also underwent multisystem polytrauma training at the Royal London Trauma Unit and was awarded Travelling Fellowships to pursue advanced endoscopic training in Italy at San Raffaele Hospital, Milan, and trauma surgery in South Africa at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town.
I am a JAG accredited upper gastrointestinal endoscopist and underwent a European Society of Gastroenterology Fellowship in Diagnostic and Interventional Endoscopic Ultrasound.
I am actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education and am a member of the Academy of Clinical Educators, am e-tutor for the Edinburgh Masters in Surgery ChM, and am a member of the South East Scotland Surgical Training Committee. I am also the South East Scotland Upper GI Tumour Group lead for HPB Cancer.
I have peer reviewed publications in all aspects of my surgical training and interests and am an invited reviewer for journals including HPB, Patient Safety in Surgery, Annals of Surgical Oncology, BMC Surgery, World Journal of Surgery, and The Surgeon. I have also worked with the General Medical Council and National Patient Safety Agency on initiatives to reduce medical error. In London I was also involved a professional mentor with the Social Mobility Foundation.
My specialist interests include diagnostic and interventional echoendoscopy (EUS), HPB cancer including neuroendocrine tumours, and the management of complex gallstone disease, pancreatitis, and pancreatic cysts.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Andrew James Healey at Spire include:
