Miss Julie McBirnie
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
MB BCh, FRCS (Ed)
I am a fellowship-trained shoulder and knee surgeon (Fellowship in Toronto, 1998-1999). Over the last 15 years as an Orthopaedic Consultant, I have developed expertise in shoulder arthroscopy and complex shoulder reconstruction. I perform regular total shoulder replacements and reverse geometry shoulder replacements for osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, rotator cuff arthropathy and post trauma.
I have a special interest in shoulder instability and injury in contact and professional sportsmen and women. I also have an interest in rotator cuff disease, management and prevention. I lecture regularly, nationally and internationally, on these subjects and also perform live surgery in order to demonstrate complex shoulder arthroscopy techniques.
I run bi-annual teaching courses in the UK with a group of experienced shoulder surgeons (The Watanabe Club). These courses aim to train senior orthopaedic trainees and junior consultants in the techniques of shoulder arthroscopy.
