Mr James Shelton

Consultant Revision Hip and Knee Surgeon

MBChB, FRCSEd (Tr & Orth), MFSTEd

I have been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon since 2022 and work at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, with private practice at Spire Claremont Hospital. I specialise in primary and revision hip and knee replacement, complex cases and second opinions. My practice combines joint replacement surgery with regional expertise in complex reconstruction, joint infection and metastatic bone disease.

I treat adults with hip and knee pain, osteoarthritis and problems after previous joint replacement. I perform primary total hip and knee replacements, revision or redo surgery, and complex reconstruction. I also assess patients with unexplained pain, stiffness, instability, infection, implant loosening, dislocation or a fracture around a joint replacement. My consultations focus on reaching a clear diagnosis, explaining the options and recommending surgery only when it is likely to improve pain and function.

In the three years to 31 March 2026, the National Joint Registry recorded 448 hip and knee procedures associated with my practice, including 278 hip and 170 knee procedures. My results remained within expected national control limits. The report recorded no linked 90-day mortality events after primary hip or knee replacement and no revisions among my 2025/26 primary hip or knee cohorts at the time of reporting.

I completed the Cavendish Fellowship in revision hip and knee replacement in Sheffield, followed by specialist hip and major trauma fellowships in Sydney. I now lead the metastatic bone disease service at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. I chair the British Hip Society International Development Committee and sit on the Society's Executive, helping develop sustainable surgical training partnerships overseas. I also supervise surgical trainees and was named South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Trainer of the Year in 2026.
