Miss Brinda Muthusamy

I received my medical training and degree from the University of Edinburgh and trained in accident and emergency followed by general medicine at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. I obtained the membership to the Royal College of Physicians before starting my training in ophthalmology. My higher surgical training in ophthalmology was completed at the Bristol Eye Hospital and am a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologist.

I worked as a clinical fellow at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA, where I completed a paediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus fellowship followed by a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology. I was appointed to my current post as a consultant in paediatric and neuro-ophthalmology at Addenbrookes Hospital in 2013. Addenbrookes is a tertiary referral centre for neurology, neuro-oncology and neurosurgery and I care for adults and children whose visual system in involved in their condition.

My general paediatric ophthalmology practice includes most paediatric ophthalmic conditions and surgical procedures: squint surgery, excision of lesions on the lid and brow, cataract surgery in children over the age of three years. During my fellowship training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, in the United States, I learned to perform paediatric squint surgery through a small keyhole incision and currently perform this routinely.

I treat adult squints and offer adjustable squint surgery to ensure a more predictable outcome to the surgery. I have been performing adult cataract surgery since my early training in 2003 and in my current role, I teach cataract surgery to trainee ophthalmologists in the NHS setting. I routinely perform micro-incisional, phacoemulsification cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation.

I was appointed as the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Clinical Tutor at Addenbrookes Hospital and am responsible for overseeing the educational needs of the ophthalmology doctors in training.
