I qualified from St George’s Hospital Medical School, London in 1987. I trained in Cardiology at The Royal London Hospital, The Royal Free Hospital and St George’s Hospital, London. Interventional training was obtained at The Washington Cardiology Center, Washington, DC and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals.

I have one of the highest volume experiences in performing adult cardiac catheterisation and coronary angioplasty procedures in the UK, and have extensive experience in all aspects of coronary angioplasty. I also have the highest volume experience in trans-catheter aortic valve implantation with over 600 procedures to date.

I am Professor of Interventional Cardiology/ Honorary Consultant Cardiologist and Director of the Cardiac Catheter labs at St Thomas’. I was President of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society from 2012-2016. I have been performing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention for over 20 years and am trained in all aspects of adult interventional cardiology including IVUS, pressure wire, stent implantation, rotational atherectomy, laser angioplasty. In addition, I have extensive experience in trans-catheter aortic valve implantation and percutaneous mitral valve interventions as well as interventions for heart failure including the Parachute device.

I am Senior Lecturer/ Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Director of the Cardiac Catheter labs at St Thomas’, the highest volume catheter lab suite in the UK. I am also Lead Clinician for Research and Development and a Council Member of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society. I am trained in all aspects of adult interventional cardiology including intravascular ultrasound, physiological lesion assessment using pressure-sensor tipped wires, stent implantation, rotational atherectomy and laser angioplasty including the laserwire for chronic total occlusions.

I have been a Council member of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society since 2005, including Treasurer for 5 years and President from 2012 to 2016.

I have a particular interest in interventional cardiology based research including risk analysis and prediction of events post percutaneous coronary intervention, evaluation of coronary stents, coronary artery and myocardial physiology during ischaemia and the Interventional management of out-of hospital cardiac arrest. I continue to run an active research team, have over 160 publications, am lead editor of a major Interventional Cardiology textbook (Oxford Textbook of Interventional Cardiology), and am currently editing the second edition. I have raised over £10m in grant funding and supervised >18 MD/PhD theses.
