Spire Southampton Awarded Prestigious VTE Status

19 May 2015

Spire Southampton Hospital has been awarded Exemplar Centre Status for its work on venous thromboembolism (VTE), making it the 24th hospital in the country and second Spire Hospital to receive this prestigious award. Professor Roopen Arya, Director of VTE Exemplar Centres Network and Emma Gee visited Spire Southampton from King’s College Hospital in London.

Venous thrombosis is a blood clot, or thrombus, that forms within a vein. Thrombosis is a blood clot which occurs within a blood vessel. A typical type of venous thrombosis is deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can break off and become a pulmonary embolism (PE). These conditions affect thousands of people in the UK each year and are potentially fatal.

Exemplar Centres are key to the success of NHS England's national VTE prevention programme, which works to reduce VTE incidents and improve patient safety across the health service. Exemplar Centres share successful strategies with other trusts for identifying patients at risk and implementing measures for avoiding VTE.

The audit was run by Karen Becheley-Price and is a huge achievement.
