Professional profile

Dr Baynes has joined Spire Southampton Hospital Perform Centre with over 25 years medical experience having graduated from Nottingham University in 1987 and embarked on a rich and varied career. After spending time in Australia following his GP specialist training, he returned home to the UK to work in general practice in the New Forest and continued in that role for over two decades whilst focusing on his studies in sports medicine. He has post-graduate qualifications in a number of General Practice areas and was accredited as a GP trainer. In 2013 he left his practice to follow a career in Sports and Exercise Medicine and Private and freelance NHS General Practice.

His first major sports medicine appointment came in 2008 when he provided medical support to a four man team from a local cycling club who took part, and eventually won, the 2008 Race Across America. That trip proved the catalyst for Steve to become involved in more high-profile sporting events, and he worked on several elite-level triathlons before taking a position as Medical Control Officer on cycling’s Tour of Britain. During his three years on the Tour, between 2010 - 2012, Dr Baynes worked closely with the UCI and UKAD to ensure the Anti-Doping Testing Policies were strictly adhered to. His sterling efforts there along with his experience working with cycling teams earned him the opportunity to work at the 2012 Olympic Games, where he was Race Doctor for the road race and time trial cycling events and was Sport Medicine Doctor for events in the Velodrome. It was during 2011 that Dr Baynes also began working with Team Sky and attended his first race at the 2011 Tour of Mediterranean. Before that year was out he had also travelled to the late-season Italian Classics, and after supporting Richie Porte in his victory in the 2013 edition Paris-Nice, began exploring the possibility of joining the team on a permanent basis which he did in 2014.

In 2010 Dr Baynes was appointed as Club Doctor with Southampton Football Club when the team was in League 1. Since his arrival the team have seen promotion to the Championships and then in to the Premier League. Dr Baynes provides medical services to the First team at home and away matches and at the training ground to all of the squads from schoolboys through the academy and to the elite squad.
