Derek Angus, 78, had a total knee replacement with consultant orthopaedic surgeon Mr James Newman.

Derek enjoyed walking and gardening. In early 2015 he was experiencing a lot of pain in his right knee which was restricting him from enjoying his hobbies.

Derek visited his GP in Pontefract who suggested an x-ray which showed some arthritis in his knee.

When his GP suggested it was time he saw a consultant he chose Mr J Newman consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Spire Methley Park Hospital.  That consultation resulted in a suggestion of a total right knee replacement. Derek said “Every aspect of the procedure was fully explained and my experience of all the teams at Spire Methley Park Hospital was outstanding. I’ve never been an in-patient before so I was apprehensive about what to expect”.

Derek followed the exercise and medication programme given to him by both consultant and the Physiotherapy department.

Derek recommends that people “Don’t delay a diagnosis if you are experiencing pain."
