Paula Bell, a 68-year-old skiing enthusiast from Holmfirth, recently had a hip replacement with Mr Aaron Ng, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Spire Methley Park Hospital.

Mrs Bell first became aware of her symptoms in March 2014 whilst she was away on a skiing holiday. She said, “The pain slowly increased over the summer months. I knew it was my hip, as I had already had my right hip replaced five years previously in 2009.”

Initially, Paula sought advice from a physiotherapist friend, who told her she was almost 100% certain the problem was with Paula’s hip. From here she conducted some research online and decided she wanted to come to Spire Methley Park Hospital and see Mr Ng. She had previously been to the hospital for other surgery and felt assured Mr Ng could provide the surgery she wanted in order for her to have a  smaller, less visible scar.

Paula says, “My experience at Spire Methley Park Hospital was excellent. I received a lot of support from all different members of staff not just Mr Ng; my anaesthetist was extremely supportive during the operations and the physiotherapists were brilliant afterwards.”

As Paula is quite an active person, her recovery was very quick once she returned home. She did exercises very regularly and used a walking stick for two weeks as advised. She was discharged at her follow up appointment and Mr Ng said he felt she had made an excellent recovery.

Paula says, “Since my operation I feel brilliant, I have no pain at all and can now do everything I did before but pain free! I am looking forward to skiing again next season and my advice to anyone considering hip replacement surgery would be to just do it!”
