Spire Little Aston Hospital recognised among UK’s top endometriosis centres

26 August 2025

Spire Little Aston Hospital has recently been accredited as an Endometriosis Centre of Excellence by the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE). This recognition confirms the Sutton Coldfield-based hospital’s position as a specialist provider of advanced care for women living with complex and severe endometriosis.

To achieve this prestigious accreditation, Spire Little Aston Hospital demonstrated full compliance with the BSGE’s rigorous clinical criteria, including high surgical standards, multidisciplinary care, and consistent positive patient outcomes. The hospital now joins a network of accredited centres across the UK offering advanced diagnostics and surgical treatment for endometriosis.

The service is led by Mr Mohan Kumar, Consultant Gynaecologist, who has extensive expertise in minimally invasive gynaecology surgery and endometriosis management. He works as part of a dedicated team that includes consultants and experts in colorectal, urology, radiology, and pain management specialties, as well as a dedicated specialist nurse.

Patients referred to Spire Little Aston Hospital's Endometriosis Centre benefit from access to a skilled clinical team and tailored treatment plans designed to address the physical and emotional challenges of this often-debilitating condition.

Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women of reproductive age worldwide. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the condition affects roughly 190 million women globally. Despite these figures, the condition remains widely misdiagnosed. Many women suffer in silence, experiencing debilitating pain that disrupts their daily lives, careers and fertility.

Since the cause of endometriosis remains unknown, curative treatment has yet to be discovered. The management and treatment of severe/deeply infiltrating endometriosis is, however, complex and centres of excellence where a multidisciplinary approach is offered are seen as best practice and the way forward.

Elisha, one of Mr Kumar’s patients, commented: “I had symptoms of endometriosis since I was a teenager, but as I approached my 30s, I experienced deep pelvic pain, bloating, bladder and bowel discomfort, and very low energy, which impacted my work and family life. After waiting months for NHS treatment and hearing waiting times could be over a year, I opted to use my private insurance.

Mr Kumar and his team put me at ease from the very start and explained everything clearly. After my operation, I felt like a different person – free of pain and discomfort and finally feeling ‘normal’.

I sleep better, have more energy, and can properly enjoy my family, career, and hobbies again. I've been getting stuck in with house renovation works, after I was stopped in my tracks by my endometriosis last year. My life has changed immeasurably.”

Mr Mohan Kumar, Consultant Gynaecologist at Spire Little Aston Hospital, added: “Becoming an accredited Endometriosis Centre is an important step forward for both our team and the patients we support. We see first-hand how much of an impact endometriosis can have, and this recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to providing the right care, at the right time, for every patient at Spire Little Aston Hospital.”

Vicky Morris, Hospital Director at Spire Little Aston Hospital, said: “We’re proud to be recognised as a BSGE-accredited Endometriosis Centre. This achievement reflects the skill and dedication of our team, and our commitment to delivering outstanding, patient-focused care.”
