Procedures offered for gallbladder removal at Spire Leicester

Keyhole surgery is most often performed for gallbladder removal. Four small incisions (cuts) are made in the abdomen and smaller instruments are used than in open surgery.

This procedure may not be suitable for everyone and sometimes open surgery may be required - for example if you've had previous surgery to your abdomen. Occasionally, during a keyhole procedure, your consultant may not be able to access or remove your gallbladder and so may need to convert to an open surgery technique to complete the removal. Your consultant will explain this to you beforehand and answer any questions you might have.

Consultations

Your consultations give you a chance to discuss your symptoms and ask questions about the procedure. Your consultant will be able to explain:

  • Which anaesthetic you need
  • How gallbladder removal works
  • Your recovery
  • The potential risks
  • Whether you need any further tests or scans to help plan your treatment
  • What your pre-operative assessment will involve

Gallbladder removal: your procedure

Before your procedure:

  • You’ll meet the team who’ll be caring for you while you’re with us
  • You’ll be given a general anaesthetic, meaning you’ll be completely asleep throughout the operation

The operation typically takes between 45 and 90 minutes, though it may be longer for open surgery.

After your procedure, you’ll recover in a private room and rest there until your healthcare team are happy for you to leave – this is usually after a few hours. If you have open surgery, you’ll need to stay in hospital for three to five days.

During your stay, you’ll have your own, en-suite room which will have:

  • Nurse call system
  • TV/Radio
  • Telephone and WiFi
  • En-suite bathroom
  • Wardrobe space and a small locker
  • Armchair

Gallbladder removal: your recovery

After your operation, you’ll probably feel some pain and discomfort. You’ll be given medication to manage this, and advice about over-the-counter painkillers you can take once you’re home.

Your consultant will give you advice about your recovery. Everyone recovers differently, but here’s a typical recovery timeline:
