CQC rates Spire Hartswood Hospital as 'Good'

22 March 2022

Spire Hartswood Hospital in Brentwood has maintained its ‘Good’ overall rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), with a new ‘Outstanding’ rating for being well-led.

Today’s report from the CQC is based on an unannounced inspection which took place in December 2021.

The ‘Outstanding’ rating reflects the inspectors’ observation that leadership at all levels of the hospitals was compassionate, inclusive and effective. The inspectors commended as outstanding practice the way that colleagues were focused on taking the time to understand patients’ individual needs to deliver high quality, personalised care. The ‘Outstanding’ rating is an improvement on the ‘Good’ rating that the hospital received for being well-led, at the time of the last inspection two years ago.

Meanwhile, the CQC rated the hospital ‘Good’ in the individual categories of safe, effective, caring and responsive to people’s needs, and across both surgical and outpatient services.

The CQC made special mention of the care provided by hospital colleagues. They described staff as treating patients “with compassion and kindness,” respecting “their privacy and dignity,” and providing emotional support for patients, their families and their carers.

They observed that colleagues helped patients understand their conditions, provided them with good information and supported them to make decisions about their care. Staff also provided advice to patients on how to live healthier lives.

Finally, inspectors also noted that key services were available seven days a week and that patients did not have to wait too long for treatment.

Jo Dean, Hospital Director at Spire Hartswood Hospital, said: “Today’s rating from the CQC is a testament to the hard work, commitment and skill of all of our colleagues. They’ve risen to the challenges posed by the pandemic over the past two years, putting the delivery of exceptional care to patients and their families at the heart of everything they do.

“We are particularly delighted to have been rated ‘Outstanding’ for being well-led. We’re now aiming to get ‘Outstanding’ ratings across the board, next time the inspectors visit.”

Spire Hartswood Hospital has 40 beds spread over 2 wards, and 4 operating theatres. It provides surgery, medical care, services for children and young people, and outpatients and diagnostic imaging.

95% of Spire Healthcare’s hospitals are rated ‘Good,’ ‘Outstanding’ or the equivalent by health inspectors in England, Wales and Scotland.
