Dr Shilpa Selvan
Consultant Rheumatologist

I am a Consultant Rheumatologist at Basildon University Hospital, part of the Mid Essex and South Essex University Hospitals Group. I have extensive experience in managing a wide range of general rheumatological conditions, including osteoporosis, gout, inflammatory arthritis, osteoarthritis, connective tissue diseases, soft tissue disorders, back pain and fibromyalgia.
I graduated from the Royal Free and University College London Medical School and also completed an intercalated BSc in Pharmacology in 2003. I undertook my specialist Rheumatology training within the Oxford Deanery and was awarded my Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in both Rheumatology and General Medicine in 2015.
I am actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training. I served as the Undergraduate Lead for Medical Education at Basildon University Hospital, and I am an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at University College London. In this senior role, I was responsible for the coordination and management of undergraduate medical education at Basildon University Hospital, as directed by University College London Medical School, and I led the local organisation and delivery of the final MBBS clinical examinations.
My further training includes completing a Master’s degree in Medical Education through the Royal College of Physicians and University College London in 2023.
My research interests focus on early inflammatory arthritis and osteoporosis. I have published in several peer‑reviewed journals and have presented my work at both national and international rheumatology conferences. I am a member of the British Society of Rheumatology.
I am also a member of the Royal College of Physicians Specialty Certificate Examination (SCE) Board for Rheumatology.
