Dr Javaid Subhani
Consultant Gastroenterologist and General Physician
MB BChir, BA, FRCP
Availability: Friday morning.
I am a consultant gastroenterologist, hepatologist and general physician offering private consultations and treatment for gastrointestinal symptoms, liver disease and general medical problems. I also manage patients with reflux, dyspepsia (indigestion and upper abdominal pain), malabsorption, diarrhoea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and rectal bleeding. I diagnose and treats a broad range of liver conditions, including those which are genetic, viral, medication and alcohol related.
My first research interest was inflammatory bowel disease (IBS) and I use non-invasive tests to differentiate inflammatory from non-inflammatory bowel conditions. I take regional referrals from the East of England for complex colonoscopy. In addition I have a specific interest in previously difficult or uncomfortable endoscopies with a high success rate in both patient acceptability and technical success.
As a doctor, I tend to focus on facts, diagnoses and treatments whilst my patient is concerned with symptom control and the fear of what it all means. I try to address both agendas and to offer the quality of care and comfort you would expect for a friend or family member. My priorities are quality, safety and comfort for my patients.
I studied preclinical medicine at St. John's College, Cambridge, where I also gained a BA in genetics. I completed my basic medical training at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge and my medical registrar training in South West London. I then worked at the Royal Free Hospital, researching the genetic epidemiology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBS). Before becoming a consultant in Essex in 2001, I worked at the Liver Transplant Unit at the Royal Free Hospital and at the National Medical Laser Centre and the Pancreatobiliary Unit at University College Hospital in London.
As an NHS consultant since 2001, I developed the Hepatology Service at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital and led the South Essex Bowel Cancer screening centre as lead colonoscopist. I have also held the role of Director of the Endoscopy and Bowel Cancer Screening Unit and been the designated Therapeutic Colonoscopist for the colorectal cancer team.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Dr Javaid Subhani at Spire include:
COVID-19 testing or antibody tests are not available as a standalone service at Spire Hartswood Hospital.
My main research interest is in advanced therapeutic endoscopy. I have also published papers and presented internationally on coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), hepatology, pancreatology and endoscopy.
