Virtual consultations:
I am a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Spire Gatwick Park private hospital, providing weight loss surgery and specialist keyhole surgery (hernias, gallbladders and anti-reflux surgery).
I studied at the University of Cambridge and won prizes for academic excellence (top first in my year). I trained in busy bariatric units in Bristol, Newcastle and Taunton and was awarded “Trainee of the Year” for two consecutive years. I was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at East Surrey Hospital in February 2014. I provide a complete weight loss surgical service including gastric band, gastric balloon, gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy.
I lead the multidisciplinary weight loss surgery team comprised of specialist nurses (Kay and Sarah), a dietitian (Lucy Jones) and a psychotherapist (Sarah Wrigglesworth) and I strongly believe that this team approach offers the best outcome for patients. Lifelong support is offered for all our patients and my results are routinely entered onto a national database. I am immensely proud of the weight loss surgery outcomes that we achieve at Gatwick Park.
I am widely published in the keyhole surgery field and most recently won a national prize at The Association of Surgeons of Great Britain meeting. I have a particular interest in patient safety and designed a national protocol for emergency doctors to look after post-operative patients. I also created a national training programme for trainee bariatric surgeons which is now in its fifth year and has received international accreditation.
I offer gallstone and hernia surgery, both in the emergency and planned settings. I have performed in excess of 400 gallbladder procedures. Hernia surgery is preferably keyhole and I have performed approximately 100 of these through a transabdominal pre-peritoneal approach (TAPP). Benefits of this approach over open surgery are a quicker recovery and less pain.
Patient experience and excellent outcomes are what drives me. I was awarded the “Your Care Matters” award by my NHS Trust in 2015 for consistent high standards and high levels of patient satisfaction. I collect patient feedback via www.iwantgreatcare.org/doctors/mr-simon-monkhouse. This is important to allow me to reflect on my offering and put the patient at the centre of their care pathway. I have regular weekly operating lists and clinics at Spire Gatwick Park and can provide ad-hoc appointments to suit the requirements of the patient.
